Fall is the season for wild mushrooms and many people are drawn to the area to learn about the noble fungus. Among the edible varieties found in this region are: matsutakes, boletos, hedgehogs, shaggmanes and chanterelles. A wide variety of non-edible mushrooms and toad stools also can be found and some of them are downright dangerous and even deadly. It is important to know what one is doing before trying to collect mushrooms for the table!
Many varieties can be found after a good fall rain in the parks but ask at the park headquarters before trying to gather them. The parks sometimes permit non-commercial gathering and will issue a free permit when it is permissible.
